Designed by James Renwick the Smithsonian Castle was completed in 1856. The first secretary of the Smithsonian resided here, amid the lecture hall, art gallery, museum, and laboratories. It is said he thought the $250,000 price of the building was exorbitant. This is a view from around 1999 when the Washington monument was being renovated.
