Temple of the
Scottish Rite

16” x 22”
Pen, Ink, Sumi Wash

Twin sphinxes guard the Temple of the Scottish Rite on 16th Street. This is the north sphinx, which is an allegory of Power (her south companion is Wisdom). The temple was designed by John Russell Pope and completed in 1915. Everything you see, from the number of stairs, to the design of the trim and number of columns, has Masonic associations.
