Bakers & Spies:
A graphic novel cold war thriller set in Washington, DC,
after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991.
A retired spy tinkers with his model train and considers his career in the CIA. Beginning in World War II and continuing through his assignment in 1960s West Germany: His train set is a tour of his checkered personal story. Each locomotive, miniature house, and small tableau is a scene from his history. Gradually we see him come to grips with events in his past, and he realizes there is one more great thing to be done in the present.
22/ Heist - the day of the heist he made sure his alibi was air-tight.
15/ Armadillo - They called the armed attaché case the “armadillo.”
16/ Fowl - Neither fish nor fowl - Murder or suicide? The truth seemed unknowable.
30/ Gear. They collected their gear and started paddling to the shore. There was no moon of course, but stars were vivid in the sky above. He was very aware of the smell of salt water and gun oil, and his pounding heart.
1/ Gargoyle - Walter entered Paris after the American army did, In September 1944.
29/ Oh-oh. There was a shout in German. Then gunfire. The Lieutenant shouted: “Bloody hell! Back to the boats, boys. Quick!”
9/ Nest - The cafe was above the gas station, like a bird’s nest.
20/ Bluff - Charm, he always had such charm. Everybody liked him. He could bluff his way through anything.
6/ Bouquet - The cafe was calm for a Monday.
28/ Camping - Camping out for hours on a stakeout.
10/ Crabby - Walters boss was crabby and perturbed.
25/ Tempting - All the girls in the office were tempting. All the boys in the office were tempted.
11/ Eagle - The great seal held sway over the lobby of the Farben building.
26/ Ego - The Director had a huge ego.
14/ Empty - The case was empty except for a couple of bricks.
5/ Flame - There was a pause and he lit his cigarette.
12/ Forget - Each line had a card to remind the person who answered of the legend associated with that number. It was easy to forget.

2/ Scurry - Walter scurried above, trying to gain the advantage.
13/ Kind - Herr Doctor was quite kind, for a spy.
19/ Ponytail - “Chantilly lace, pretty face, a pony tail - hangin' down, a wiggle and a walk, a giggle and a talk; It gon' make that world go 'round.” American music ruled the airwaves, even in East Berlin.
17/ Salty - Salty pretzels and amber Ocktoberfest beer.
4/ Scallop - Walter’s boss bit a scallop out of a jelly donut.
18/ Scrape - When you got in a scrape you called the plumbers for a clean up.
27/ Snack - On thé train they had a drink and a snack.
7/ Trip - It was a short trip to the police station.
